Understanding SR&ED Tax Credits and How Your Business Can Benefit

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive program is one of Canada's most generous tax credit programs, yet many eligible businesses don't claim it. Understanding the program can provide significant funding for innovation.

SR&ED credits are available to businesses of all sizes that conduct qualifying research and development activities in Canada. The program provides tax credits on eligible expenditures related to scientific research or experimental development.

CCPCs can earn an enhanced investment tax credit of 35% on the first $3 million of qualified expenditures, with the excess eligible for a 15% credit. The enhanced rate credit is fully refundable, meaning you receive the credit even if you owe no tax.

Eligible activities must involve systematic investigation or search through experiment or analysis. They must address scientific or technological uncertainty โ€” meaning you're trying to achieve something that can't be accomplished using standard practice or existing knowledge.

Three types of work qualify: basic research (advancement of scientific knowledge without practical application), applied research (advancement of knowledge with practical application), and experimental development (achieving technological advancement).

Eligible expenditures include salaries and wages of employees directly engaged in SR&ED work, materials consumed in the research process, contract payments for SR&ED performed on your behalf (limited to 80%), and overhead costs.

Documentation is critical. The CRA requires contemporaneous records that describe the scientific or technological objectives, the uncertainties addressed, the work performed, and the results achieved. Keeping a research log or journal throughout the project is strongly recommended.

Claims must be filed within 18 months of the tax year-end. Missing this deadline means losing the credit entirely for that year. Given the complexity of SR&ED claims, working with a professional who specializes in SR&ED is highly recommended.
